People often assume that natural stone is “stain- proof, ” however all stone is porous to some degree. If not properly treated with a protective sealer, water, oils or other liquids can easily penetrate the stone, leaving behind unwanted stains. Grout is the material visible between tiles. It is used to fill the space between the tiles and to support them. Selecting the right grout for the job is as important as selecting the right tile and backing. Grout is not a tile but is an important part of any finished tile project. Grout is usually a cement-based material that is used to fill in the spaces between the tiles. Grout comes in various colors. Grout is also used to fill space or cavities and provide continuity between building elements. In some applications, grout will act in a structural capacity like in brick masonry or concrete masonry.
Most grouts are porous. This means that they will absorb water, and over time, this can damage the substrate of the grout in addition to eroding the grout itself. Mildew and mold will tend to develop, and they will spread under the tile, leading to serious problems in the future. In addition, the porous nature of grout makes it a magnet for dirt and stains, and it will quickly become unsightly with use. For these reasons, sealing the grout you have selected for your project is an absolute necessity.
The main reason a tile grout sealer is used is to prevent your tiles from absorbing moisture. Cement, just like concrete is porous and if exposed to water, it will absorb it. If a grout sealer is not placed, then this water can seep under the tiles and lead to a number of complications such as mildew and fungus. The main part that gets affected is the substrate or the layer exactly below the tile.

Simple means to clean tiles
If you have mildew or mold growing between your tiles, then you will need something alkaline based to stem the growth. Use some chlorine bleach or grease to get rid of the mildew. Chlorine works amazingly well on the mildew and also helps keep grout clean thanks to the oxidizing elements in it.
If you are dealing with hard water stains then you will need full bodied vinegar which is almost Equivalent to minor acid. This along with some elbow grease will help you get rid of the unsightly white stains that smear tiles. Acid based cleaners work very well with such stains because they are primarily made of calcium and acid based cleaners work the best on it.There are certain things you need to keep in mind when cleaning tiles. Wash the tiles with water and make sure that no water remains. Always use a really mild detergent. Also stay away from ammonia- based cleaners as this could lead to discoloration. If you have any of the cleaning solutions spilling onto the ground, remember to cleaning it at once.
